OpenAirCPR

Colorado has a new Indie Rock station! OpenAirCPR 1340 AM kicked off it’s broadcast life this morning at 6 AM with Paper Bird’s “Colorado”, followed by Arcade Fire’s “Wake Up”. While I haven’t had much of a chance to listen to it today, people are already raving – including the fine folks at the Underground Music Showcase headquarters who posted “We at UMS HQ are totally digging on OpenAirCPR!” as their Facebook status today.

The station’s morning-show host and assistant music director Alisha Sweeney was quoted in the Denver Post as saying “We’re Colorado Public Radio, and we support local music”, but this sampling doesn’t really back up that claim. I checked out the schedule, but it doesn’t list any “shows” – only DJ’s – so I am unable to determine whether there will be shows dedicated to local music. Make sure to make your feelings about local music known!

Not only can you tune in on a traditional radio (if you are within the station’s 1000-watt signal originating from Denver’s Ruby Hill neighborhood), but the station also provides streaming at http://openaircpr.org/. Ricardo Baca wrote a column about the station in yesterday’s Arts & Entertainment section of the Denver Post.  OpenAir is funded by Colorado Public Radio, so please donate if you like having another indie rock listening option!

Concert Review: Nightmare on Blake Street

My Body Sings Electric
Friday night’s Nightmare on Blake Street event at the Summit Music Hall featured a Haunted House, a costume contest, and great performances by My Body Sings Electric, The Pirate Signal, Eldren, Shoot to Please, and Valedictorian. The Haunted House was a little weak and I heard one of the actors got punched pretty hard. It also reeked of gas fumes from a prop chainsaws. UPDATE: I’ve seen some pretty cool pictures from inside the Haunted House lately showing stuff I never saw. I must have rushed through it…
Partygoers
As a hoodied victim hung from the rafters, the zombified My Body Sings Electric performed a high energy set featuring hits “Outside”, “Step Into The Light, their newly completed single “She Wants To Be A Doctor”, and a Thrice cover – who is playing the Summit on Sunday night while MBSE is in Fort Collins supporting Air Dubai/The Epilogues. At the end of the set, they were joined on stage by contest winner Brady Berryman sporting his Justin Timberlake “Dick in a Box” costume.
My Body Sings Electric
The members of Eldren dressed in a variety of costumes: Nasir and Tyler wore red and blue bodysuits, respectively, which left little to the imagination. Also onstage were a hot dog, an astronaut, Beetlejuice and Lydia, and Bill and Hillary Clinton. They also performed a cover – MGMT’s “Brian Eno”. Eldren is so prolific, their 45-minute set didn’t include a single song from their two EP releases.
Eldren
The Pirate Signal put on a solid set, but seemed a bit out of place in the lineup and had a somewhat difficult time maintaining the crowd.

Concert Preview: Hawthorne Heights w/ ViFolly, Life in Electric, and Calibrate Me @ Hi Dive

I am really feeling the effects of back-to-back drunken nights with Places/Dirty Rotten Rhymers and In The Whale/Petals of Spain. But, that’s the way it goes sometimes and I must power through – particularly since the Hi Dive has such a strong lineup tonight.

Hawthorne Heights
Success has not been easy for Dayton, Ohio’s Hawthorne Heights. Since releasing their debut album in 2004 on the strength of their emo anthem “Ohio is for Lovers”, the band has been sued by two of its record companies, been in a high profile media feud with rapper Ne-Yo, and lost their lead guitarist/”screamer” vocalist Casey Calvert to an accidental prescription drug interaction. In August, they released the first in a trilogy of self-issued EP’s. “Hate” features more “aggressive songs” that are “a lot heavier than anything we’ve ever done”, according to the band’s lead singer JT Woodruff. Judging by the “Is This What You Wanted?”, that claim is hard to dispute.

ViFolly
Also from Ohio, ViFolly is making their first trip to Denver. ViFolly is the project of twin brothers Matt and James Prather. They write different styles of music both for themselves and others, and the tracks they’ve posted on ReverbNation are scattered. Their strongest track is the ambitious, A Perfect Circle inspired “Feathers”. Check out this fan-made video:

Life in Electric
As documented in my September interview with Ross Ryan, Denver’s Life in Electric has had an interesting last 12 months. After going on hiatus in the Fall of 2010, guitarist Ryan, Bassist Zach Newton, and drummer Ryan Ramirez hooked up with former Speakeasy Tiger vocalist Kyle Simmons to form the band Boys. But, Boys had internal problems of their own and went on hiatus in June of 2010. That gave new life for Life in Electric. As has been well documented, the band was preparing for tonight’s show when Boys got called up by Jane’s Addition to open up for them on three shows – the last of which is tomorrow (October 17th) in New York City. Whether the two bands can continue to coexist is yet to be determined. I certainly hope so, as both bands feature very songs with strong hooks, sludgy guitars, and unique vocalists.

Calibrate Me
Calibrate Me was chosen by 93.3 KTCL listeners to play the big stage at the 93.3 Big Gig earlier this year – sharing a stage with one of the band’s most obvious influcences: Blink-182. At the last minute, the stage manager at Comfort Dental Amphitheater booted them off the the main stage lineup because there wasn’t enough room for their equipment (it is typical for stage managers to stack equipment from the back to the front – headliners to openers – in order to facilitate faster changeovers. Still, that’s a pretty hard pill for a young band to swallow, as they were moved to the smaller “locals” stage.

See you at the Hi-Dive! It starts early, so make sure to arrive before 6:30 PM.

Weekend Preview: October 13th – October 16th, 2011

  • “FORTY FIVE with ALF” @ The Meadowlark – No, KTCL’s “Locals Only” DJ Alf is not turning 45 (but he’s not that far off). Wikipedia informs me that “45’s” are actually vinyl platters which are seven inches in diameter and have grooves that produce audio when a special needle is dragged along them. What will they think of next? He’ll mostly be playing instrumentals from the 50s, 60s and 70s.  Soul, funk, rock and jazz. 8 PM, 21+, cover unknown.
  • Pete Stein w/ Statue of Liberty and Black Dots @ Lion’s Lair – 8 PM, 21+, $5
  • Boulder Acoustic Society @ Illegal Pete’s Downtown – 7 PM, All Ages, FREEEEEE!
  • The Photo Atlas begin their East Coast tour in Omaha, Nebraska. Knock ’em dead, boys!

  • Howard Jones @ Summit Music Hall – The 80’s synth scientist will play his hit albums “Human’s Lib” and “Dream into Action”. I was totally gonna go until I realized that Jones and Thomas Dolby are not the same person – 7 PM, All Ages, $35
  • Snake Rattle Rattle Snake begins their West Coast tour in San Diego, California. Knock ’em dead, boys (and Hayley)!

Single Preview: My Body Sings Electric “She Wants To Be A Doctor”

Since April, I’ve participated in a few Kickstarter projects to help musicians get some studio time. It’s usually a win-win situation: the band gets money, and the “backer” gets some cool rewards – usually in the form of band merchandise. For larger contributions, some bands offer rewards that are more personal – such as the “Thank You” video that Monroe Monroe made for me (found here) for backing their project. One of my rewards for backing My Body Sings Electric’s Kickstarter project was exclusive access to the single that my contribution helped to get recorded.

My Body Sings ElectricMy Body Sings Electric (photographer unknown)

The song is called “She Wants To Be A Doctor”. It is 3:14 long and around 160 BPM. It begins (and ends) with dueling stereo guitars – Jeff Fedel in your right ear and Nick Crawford in your left ear – reminiscent of the intro to “Jealous Teeth” by their Inca House Collective brothers The Photo Atlas. The overall sound is similar to that of their previous album “Changing Color”. Crawford’s and Fedel’s guitars complement each other and stay distinct in the mix throughout the length of the song. The rhythm is about as straightforward as MBSE gets, but Jason Bower’s punchy bass and Ben Scarboro’s kick drum and hi-hat shine through (particularly in the chorus and the bridge). Brandon Whalen’s vocals are strong and clear and employ multi-tracked harmonies.

As for the lyrics, it is a boyfriend’s lament about how his girlfriends no longer have time for him. One wants to be a doctor and “bury herself inside of books that I can’t even read”. The other wants to be a model and “dance around in pretty clothes that she can’t afford to keep”. While one is trying to better herself internally through learning and the other externally through her appearance, the boy has stopped caring about both his brains and looks and can barely get motivated enough to leave the couch. Whether his malaise is borne out of his own laziness or in response to the decreased attention; whether to feel sorry for him or yell through the song at him to get up off his ass and make something of himself is for the listener to decide.

It’s a catchy song. Easy to dance to, easy to learn the lyrics. They’ve played it live a couple of times and will most likely play it again at the “Nightmare on Blake Street” event that they are headlining on October 28th at Summit Music Hall with The Pirate Signal, Eldren, and more. If you’ve never backed a Kickstarter project, it’s pretty exciting to be an “investor” in the bands you like. By the way, my contribution also made me eligible to have a song written about me by My Body Sings Electric. It will be very interesting to see if the band is able to capture my “essence”. Ha ha!

Concert Summary: Foo Fighters @ Pepsi Center

Dave Grohl warned the crowd at last night’s Foo Fighters performance that the band would play a lot of the songs they’ve amassed over their 16 year existence: two hours and 40 minutes worth over two dozen songs to be exact. Of course, there were a lot of arena rock gimmicks to stretch an extra hour out of the songs they did play – the most enjoyable being a negotiation with the crowd (via backstage night-vision video) concerning the length of the encore. The show featured almost five hours of entertainment in total when you include the solid performances by Cage the Elephant and the unexpected (but fun) pre-openers Mariachi el Bronx. The near-capacity crowd managed to stay pretty energized until the last note rang out at a quarter of midnight.

Foo Fighters

The Foo Fighters’ set list was a mix of new (7 songs from Wasting Light), old (2 classic rock covers), and hits (13 songs from their Greatest Hits collection). If you missed it or just want to relive it, check out my playlist of the set list on Rdio.

Album Review: Sun Red “Breathes Ages” EP

sunred
Not long ago, Denver band (die) Pilot was riding a wave of good press. Westword Magazine’s Dave Herrera listed their debut album Radiation, Weather, and Art as one of the best Colorado releases of 2005. Westword then honored the band in their Best of 2006 issue as the “Best Up-and-Coming Band”.  But, as is all too common with many promising young bands, (die) Pilot failed to stay airborne. Personnel changes and internal conflicts prevented (die) Pilot from ever really finding their voice and the project was grounded by it’s chief member Eugene Brown in early 2009. It didn’t take long for the singer/songwriter to re-emerge with a new project called Sun Red featuring former (die) Pilot members Dan Sullivan (guitar) and Chris Durant (drums). The band has just released it’s first EP “Breathes Ages”.

Musically, “Breathes Ages” is more focused than (die) Pilot’s last release. Brown’s vocals are more confident – spending more time in the falsetto range with a vibrato and tonal quality not unlike Jimmy Gnecco (but lacking Gnecco’s unsurpassed power and pitch). Sullivan’s guitar style favors arpeggios and hardly any distortion, inviting favorable comparisons to The Edge and Mark Knopfler. The rhythm section of Durant and bassist Trevor Noel Gagstetter rarely intrude. When Durant does ramp up the intensity with more tom toms, tambourine, and drum synth accents, Sullivan and Gagstetter rise to the challenge such as in the haunting “Terrorform” and the EP’s closing track “The Alchemy of Man”, which sounds like it was written specifically to be the Grand Finale.

sunredband

All four of the songs are immediately accessible and enjoyable – so much so that you’d swear they were copying someone other band’s formula. But, while I occasionally hear bits and pieces of things that make me think of U2, Muse, Jeff Buckley, and Ours, the Johnny Cash rockabilly rhythms that are prevalent in Sun Red’s music really make them unique. Brown and company have found their groove, and it has resulted in a foot-stomper which was probably as much fun to make as it is to listen to.

You can sample two tracks from their label’s website, where you can also download the EP. It can also be found at Amazon’s MP3 store and iTunes. Also, follow them on Facebook.
