Weekend Preview: New Year’s Eve 2011

So, we’re not going to do our traditional Weekend Preivew today. Instead, we’ll be focusing in depth on the many New Year’s Eve events in Denver. As you can see, we all have a difficult decision to make.

The Foot w/ Monroe Monroe, Vices I Admire, and In The Whale @ Marquis Theater

Doors at 7 PM, $10 – $12, 18 and over.

This is the one I’ve chosen to attend. Not only do I consider Monroe Monroe, Vices I Admire, and In The Whale great bands and great friends, but The Foot is on the road so much that when they are in town, it feels special. It’s also a hell of a deal! If you pre-purchase tickets at http://thefootnyeparty.bandcamp.com for $10 and NO SERVICE CHARGE, you receive an immediate digital download from each band AND a physical copy of each band’s latest EP at the show! Crazy, right?

Bop Skizzum w/ Eldren,  Lizzie Huffman, and In Due Time @ Moe’s Original BBQ and Bowl

Doors at 8 PM, $15, 16 and over.

It kills me to miss this show, but there’s only one of me. Fortunately, I’ll have Aimee Giese there to contribute photos and a recap to Everyday (In the Mile High)! New singer Julie Almeria brings a pretty different vibe to Bop Skizzum, so check them out if you’ve seen them before with Erin and let me know what you think! There are very few bands out there that have managed to be as prolific and tight in such a short amount of time as Eldren has. They are definitely in my top 5 favorite local bands. I’ve also been meaning to see Lizzie Huffman, but it never seems to work out. Someday… Don’t forget the free champagne toast at midnght for those attendees of legal drinking age!

“Purple Reign” w/ Chadzilla & The Asteroids @ Gothic Theatre

Doors at 8:00 PM, $25 – $40, 16+.

Straight outta Las Vegas, Purple Reign is the best of the Prince tribute bands. The best choice for the over-40 set or those of you kids who wish you grew up in the 80’s.

Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk w/ Orgone @ Cervante’s Masterpiece Ballroom

Doors at 8:00 PM, $35, All Ages.

It’s gonna get stupid funky at Cervantes! But I feel like I just saw Dumpstaphunk at Cervante’s a few months ago…

Prince Paul w/ DJ Vajra and Cobraconda @ Beauty Bar

Doors at 9 PM, Presale tickets $23 – $30, 21 and over.

If you are an alcoholic, then this is your show! Your ticket gives you access to an OPEN BAR with premium well, wine, draft beers, and Red Bull!!! The event has a Lucha Libre theme, so bring your Lucha masks.

New Years Eve @ Illegal Petes Lodo

Doors at 9 PM, FREE, ALL AGES.

Mike Howard (Mr. How Weird) will be spinning records and there will be happy hour drink prices all night long. It may not be one of the more high-powered NYE events, but it’s the only one that is FREE and ALL AGES. Besides, Illegal Pete’s deserves some love for all they have done to promote the local music scene through it’s Thursday night free concerts, Starving Artists program, and Eat & Greet events. And Illegal Pete’s owner Pete Turner’s Greater Than collective helped get the latest Snake Rattle Rattle Snake and Ian Cooke releases made. So, even if you can’t make it on NYE, stop into an Illegal Pete’s sometime in 2012 and tell them “Thanks!”.

Pretty Lights w/ Zedd and Paul Basic @ 1st Bank Center

Doors at 7:30 PM, $60 + Service Charge, ALL AGES, SOLD OUT.

Derek Vincent Smith follows up sold out performances at Red Rocks and Fillmore Auditorium earlier this year with a Sold Out show at 1STBANK Center.

Concert Recap: InnerPartySystem’s Last Show Ever?

IPSCC Marquee
Die Tonight, Live Forever? 1,800 miles away in the early morning hours of August 28th, Hurricane Irene was doing Denver a favor. Following an announcement that InnerPartySystem would go on indefinite hiatus, the band announced two final shows: at Denver’s Bluebird Theater on August 28th and “the last show” in New York on August 31st. But the weather prevented them from travelling to Denver on the 28th and the show had to be rescheduled for September 5th – making the Denver appearance the last ever scheduled performance by the band

InnerPartySystem

Several of Denver’s music elite showed up to say goodbye to a band that enjoyed a large following here. Among the crowd were members of The Epilogues, The Photo Atlas/Serious Moonlight, 3OH!3, and Take to the Oars. Also on hand were KTCL DJ’s Nic Cage and Nerf. Before launching into “American Trash”, singer Patrick Nissley made a point to thank KTCL for being such a strong supporter of the band.  During that same song, it appeared for a moment that Cobraconda’s Spencer Foreman was planning to dump a trash can full of ice over Nissley’s head from behind, but Foreman thought better of it. IPS’s biggest hit “Don’t Stop” was saved for last, during which the band was joined on stage by several of their fans and friends. As the song ended and the stage cleared, I saw drummer Jared Piccone unplug one of Nissley’s synthesizers and hand it to a fan in the pit – perhaps a sign of acrimony between band members?

InnerPartySystem

Denver’s bad boys of rap Cobraconda opened the show. Prior to hitting the stage, they debuted their video for “BBHM$” (Bitch Better Have My Money). As the group promised on their Facebook page, the video was an R-Rated revelry of cocaine, alcohol, and oral sex (which may or may not have been simulated). Most of the crowd stood with their mouths agape unsure of how to react (particularly those who were on a date). Others gasped and whooped it up. The duo then hit the stage and pounded through a tight set that was punctuated by back-to-back tracks designed to get the hometown crowd going: “Never Going Back to Cali” (sampling 2Pac’s “California Love”) and “Everyday (In The Mile High)” (sampling Rusko’s “Everyday”). They closed out their set with fan favorites “K.I.S.S.I.N.G.” and “El Camino”. Judging from the amount of band merchandise I saw in the crowd, they picked up several new fans as a result of this coveted opening slot.

  • InnerPartySystem at the Bluebird Theater is a show you won’t want to miss.  It was supposed to be IPS’s 2nd-to-last show ever.  But since hurricane Irene prevented them from travelling to Denver last week, this rescheduled date may be THE last show.  Denver’s bad-boys of hip-hop Cobraconda are opening and will be premiering their video for BBHM$.  This show had been sold out, but there are a few tickets remaining as a result of refund requests.  Get them fast!  Doors at 8 PM, $25, 16+.

Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t I?

Yep.  It’s another blog.  What makes mine better than the billions of other blogs out there?  I never said it was – so BACK OFF!

Seriously, I’ve become pretty addicted to the Denver scene – mainly the music and the people who make that music – and I want to do whatever I can to promote the artists that deserve a wider audience.  The shared sense of community and mutual support and admiration I’ve experienced is really inspiring.  I also like to eat and Denver has a wide variety of food options.  From five-star restaurants to brewpubs to diners, dives, and food trucks, Denver has a vibrant foodie scene.  So, occasionally I’ll blog about food.

One post per day is the goal.  It may not be world-changing or even topical, but hopefully you will find it witty and informative.  I’ll do my best to be honest and not blindly gush over everything.

Thanks to Cobraconda for inspiring the blog title, and thanks to indiebitches.com for inspiring me to blog about the scene from a male perspective.
