EXCLUSIVE EP REVIEW: Monroe Monroe “Hello Moon”

Hello Moon
Frank “Bella” Abbatecola has a fascination with the Moon. Perhaps it was borne out of his time spent at an Antarctic scientific research center, where Moon sightings can’t be taken for granted during the Austral Summer. Maybe it has to do with the mythology of the Moon and its alleged ability to induce insanity. Or, maybe it is because the Moon signals the arrival of night when it’s time to go out and rock. Whatever the reason, nobody who knows Abbatecola should be at all surprised that Monroe Monroe’s new EP would be titled Hello Moon.

The band’s first EP Love Wins, which was released in January and contained the local hit “Squeeze”, earned the band major attention at the Westword Music Showcase Awards where they picked up the top prize of a recording package worth $10,000. The result of that award is a collection of five songs that builds upon the formula that made Love Wins so successful. Hello Moon starts off with a pair of danceable pop-punk love songs: “Adore” and “Love Language (Wild Hearts)”. Based on these two tracks, listeners will continue to draw comparisons between Abbatecola’s voice and U2’s Bono as their range, tone, and delivery are very similar. But the guitars sound bigger and the rhythms are more aggressive compared to Love Wins. Abbatecola’s lone guitar at the beginning of “Adore” (which you can stream from the widget above) is so rich and reverberant, you would swear that it was recorded in the Pepsi Center rather than in a booth at Rocky Mountain Recorders. The bass sound of Monroe Monroe’s newest member James Morrison (also of Young Cities) gives these songs more punch. Nobody will accuse Morrison of overplaying on this record. He keeps it simple and plays only what is needed to support the rhythm like a good bass player should.

The album’s middle track, “A Place to Start”, is harder and more masculine than anything the band has released thus far. It starts of with a Sex Pistols meets Jimmy Eat World guitar duel between Abbatecola and Tavis Alley before the drums and bass step in to break up the fight and kick the song into high gear. Truth be told, Matt Morse’s relentless attack on the hi-hat is a bit distracting on this track (particularly on the chorus). A little restraint might have made the song sound even heavier. Morse’s impressive skills are better on display in “Summon the Sound” where he plays a funky syncopated rhythm using every piece of his drum kit including a drum synthesizer. I’ve seen the jaws of other drummers drop when they watch Morse perform this song live. The lyrical theme of “Summon the Sound” is one not frequently used by Abbatecola – I don’t love you anymore and I feel fine (“I believe I’m getting better. Over you”) – and it provides a refreshing change of sentiment. “Your Heart Sings”, an epic minor-key composition with fluctuating dynamics and a blistering outro, closes the album. It’s one of those songs that benefits from being positioned at the end of a record, allowing you to wrap your head around what you just heard in the silence that follows. Alley’s aggressive manner of playing is one of the reasons why Hello Moon moves Monroe Monroe closer to their own signature sound.

One minor annoyance for me is that the vocals are sometimes buried in the mix or lazily enunciated. Abbatecola is a singer who seems to prioritize hitting the right note and nailing the cadence of the syllables ahead of the words themselves. But, in order for music of this genre to rise to the level of “anthemic”, fans needs to be able to belt out the lyrics at a live show, or their car, or their room. There are some who pore over lyrics to decode their meanings and evaluate their literary worthiness. Maybe Abbatecola is one of those people and lacks the confidence in his own writing to sing his lyrics clearly. But I think most people (myself included) just want to be able to sing along, and may find it more difficult to connect with a song if they can’t distinguish the words. That said, Hello Moon is a step forward for the band in many ways and should help propel them further up the Denver music food chain.

Event Review: Yelpapalooza 3.5: Yelp Turns It Up To 11

Yelpapalooza

2011 marks the third year that local chapter of the business review website Yelp has held an annual event in Denver to showcase some of the area’s food, beverage, service, and live music offerings. Apparently, there has been so much interest in “Yelpapalooza” that the organizers decided to throw two events this year. Thus, Yelpapalooza 3.5 was born.

October 26th’s Yelpapalooza 3.0 was a “monster” of an event – both in theme and size. Just 5 days before Halloween, guests were encouraged to arrive in costumes. It was held at Casselman’s (with additional DJ performances at The Matchbox across the alley). The place was packed! So, when I heard that Yelpapalooza 3.5 would be held at Stoney’s Bar and Grill at 11th & Lincoln, I was concerned about the size of the venue. Stoney’s served as a venue for the 2011 Westword Music Showcase, but in terms of size it’s no Casselman’s. And the event was crowded, but not overly so, despite being free for guests who RSVP’d on the Yelp website (a donation of $5 at the door to Invest in Kids was suggested but not required). The theme “Yelp Turns It Up to 11” was a reference to the historic date: 11/11/11.

The doors opened at 7 PM for Yelp Elite members, and at 8 PM for everyone else.  When I arrived shortly after 8 PM, the R&B-jazz-rock band Petals of Spain had already begun their set, although without singer/keyboardist Hunter Hall. And while the band has enough songs in its catalog featuring Nic Hammerberg (“Loading Zone”) and Air Dubai’s Wesley Watkins (“What it is”) on lead vocals, these guys put on a more confident show when all five members are present. Cute girls representing Bacardi were walking around offering mixed drink samples featuring their new OakHeart Spiced Rum. The area in front of the stage was the easiest place to move around. More crowded were the areas in front of the bar and towards the back where most of the vendors were. I headed over to the Wahoo’s Fish Tacos flavor and was handed a plastic cup filled with white rice, black beans, chicken, lettuce, salsa, and a spicy chili sauce. Despite being served out of buffet tubs, the rice and beans were perfect in texture. The chili sauce left some heat on my lips, but was not overpowering to me. That being said, I was a little surprised to see a chain restaurant featured at Yelpapalooza. I don’t know many people who have never visited a Wahoo’s location. Next up was a Mocha Latte Fozen Yogurt from 32nd Treat. Very tasty, particularly due to the chocolate/cinnamon crumble topping. I had hoped to try the Pumpkin Spice, but I didn’t want to take two portions. They also had some cute mini-cupcakes. Is the cupcake fad still hot?

Petals of Spain

Nic Hammerberg (Petals of Spain)

In between bands, DJ Savior Breath entertained the crowd by mashing up classic rock/R&B with current Top 40 tunes. Take to the Oars took the stage next and played a mix of tracks from their full-length album “American Volume” and new tracks, closing with a cover of The Fly’s “Got You (Where I Want You)”. Las Brisas Restaurant in Englewood was offering Crispy Chile Rellenos and Enchiladas right next to the stage. I tried the Relleno. It was good, but I really could have used a knife to cut through the slightly sinewy Anaheim pepper. It was also quite spicy! Deschutes Brewery to the rescue! They were offering ample cups full of Inversion IPA or Obsidian Stout. I opted for the IPA. Now, I’m not a beer snob. I’m perfectly fine with Bud Light because I try not to consume too many liquid calories. While the IPA was very hoppy, I found it to be smooth and delicious. Too bad they aren’t based in Colorado.

Take to the Oars

Mike Trujillo (Take to the Oars)

The Dont’s and Be  Carefuls rounded out the live music portion of the night with their brand of high-energy electro-pop. Vendors had started to pack up their tables and the crowd was starting to thin out. My wife and friends took this opportunity to visit what was arguably the busiest attraction of the night: Denver Photo Booth. Unfortunately, they had run out of color ink a while back and were only capable of printing in black and white. The pictures were also blurry if somebody was moving. A neat concept – poorly executed.

Despite the pre-cooked vats of food, it’s hard to complain about a free event as cool as this – particularly when it provides exposure for local music. I’m glad to live in a city where these types of events can be successful. Thanks Yelp!

PLAYLIST: Jury Duty

Jury Duty

I’ve got the dreaded Jury Duty today. As much as I appreciate being part of the civic process, sitting around for hours with a bunch of strangers waiting for my name to be called is not my idea of fun. God forbid I get seated on a jury. Maybe if I wear a Star Trek costume or periodically shout out racial slurs, they’ll excuse me. Anyway, I’m definitely going to need music to help me get through this so I came up with a Jury Duty inspired playlist. Enjoy, and take it with you the next time your number comes up (you are registered to vote. Right?).
